Our Goals

To present two orchestral programs of classical,
semi-classical and popular music in Elko per season.

To provide a venue for emerging young talent to
appear as soloists.

To afford employment and performance
opportunities for northern Nevada professional
musicians and composers.

Our History

Since its inception, 82 student soloists and
over 1800 members of musical ensembles
have had the opportunity to perform with
this professional orchestra.

The NNCOA has had the honor of commissioning
and premiering these major orchestral works:
  • The Sagebrush Suite
  • The Mark Twain Suite: Reflections on America
  • Concerto for Flute, Piano and Orchestra
  • Artsik
  • It's About Time, for Jazz Combo and Orchestra by David Bugli, premiered in November 2010.

The NNCOA was fortunate to have had
George Rosenberg as the Founding Conductor
and Music Director of the orchestra.

Since his retirement in 1997,
guest conductors have been employed who
have offered a rich diversity of musical
knowledge and many years of experience.
Many of the members of the orchestra
are professionals, some with many years
of experience, some just starting, and
some are from Elko.

Our Personnel

Lynn Rubel
has been the Symphony Manager since 1989.
She has also performed on numerous
occasions with the Symphony.

Lynn received her vocal training at the
American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
While in Chicago, she sang with the
Lyric Opera, participated in the Grant Park
programs, and appeared in numerous musicals,
including The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady,
and West Side Story.

Miss Rubel's diverse repertoire, which ranges
from opera to country western and includes
songs in twelve languages, has enabled her
to perform in many different mediums.

She has presented concerts, master-classes,
and educational assemblies in fourteen states
and has been soloist with numerous symphony
orchestras.

She was a featured performer at the
Nevada Arts Council Conference which
was held in Elko in 1998, and has
collaborated with violinist Cynthia Lang Weld
of Reno and pianist Barbara LaVake of Virginia City.

In 2000 she was featured in the title role of
the Great Basin College production of
Donizetti's comic opera, Rita, which was
performed both in Elko and Sacramento.

Due to her efforts, The Sagebrush Suite and
The Mark Twain Suite, two commissioned
works by Gary R. Buchanan, and Artsik,
a commissioned work by Jason Polise,
were premiered by the orchestra.
In May of 2001, a work for flute, piano,
and orchestra written by Gary R. Buchanan
was premiered at A Family Affair.
