YOUTH MUSICIANS

In fulfilling the musical needs of the community
and providing opportunities to young artists,
FOA has few peers. Most members of the
Orchestra have been regulars since 1988,
including dozens of students (many now
adult professionals), young musicians with
little opportunity for performing with the
more established orchestras in Reno.

The close relationship with the Carson City
Symphony and the Ruby Mountain Symphony
(Northern Nevada Concert Orchestra Association)

allows for extended venues. Maestro Buchanan
has been a regular guest conductor in Elko,
fulfilling several commissions with the
Ruby Mountain Symphony , working with
students and colleagues seated in both
orchestras, and performing with other
artists and diverse groups; for example:

  • Flute & Piano Duo Mary & Barry Hannigan
  • Cowgirl Poet Sue Wallis
  • Flautist Mary Miller
  • Cellist Peter Lenz
  • Harp and Vibraphone Duo Beverly Colgan and Joe Venuto
  • The Hummingbirds & StringDivas Student Harp Ensembles
  • Mark Twain impersonator McAvoy Layne
  • Western Shoshone Youth Dance Group.

Several of these have also performed with the Orchestra in Reno.
